Tigers Take Top Four Spots En Route To Big Win At OWU
Wittenberg wins sixth tournament of 2014-15 season, topping 14-team field by a whopping 42 strokes.
DELAWARE, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers put together a weekend of golf that could only be described as total domination at Ohio Wesleyan's Laura Bump Invitational. The Tigers shattered multiple school records, swept the top four positions in the final individual results, and led from wire-to-wire en route to a 42-stroke victory.
Wittenberg carded rounds of 300 and 301 at Mill Creek Golf Club, both of which easily topped the previous school record of 306 recorded at the BSC Southern Shootout in 2012. The resulting two-round score of 601 crushed the previous mark of 616 established at the same tournament.
The Tigers easily outdistanced second-place Madonna University, which posted a two-day total of 643, and third-place Davenport University, which finished at 647. The tournament title was Wittenberg's sixth of the 2014-15 season.
Individually, Wittenberg players took the top four positions in the final standings, led by freshman Jane Hopkinson-Wood (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School). She won her fourth tournament of a remarkable inaugural collegiate campaign with rounds of 74 and 73 for a total of 147, two strokes clear of teammate Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Perry).
Waers had finished at 149 after leading the tournament with a collegiate-best round of even-par 72 on the opening day. That score matched Hopkinson-Wood's school record.
Right behind was sophomore Macy Hubbard (Mason, Ohio/Mason) with a 150 to place third, and junior Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) rounded out the top four with a 155, good for fourth place. In addition, junior Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown) finished in the top 10, taking ninth place with a 161.
Four Tigers also competed in the tournament as individuals, and all four of them finish in the top half of the 86-player field. Senior Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) finished eighth with a 160, freshman Brianna Yee (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) took 12th with a 162, senior Rachel Steiner () placed 27th with a 169, and senior Savannah Fox (Massillon, Ohio/Perry) claimed 38th with a 175.
