Tigers Take Command Of NCAC With Big Win At Kenyon
Wittenberg is halfway home to first-ever league championship after dominating 23-stroke win at NCAC Championship Series #1.
HOWARD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers are two rounds from program history after dominating the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship Series #1 with a 23-stroke victory.
The Tigers posted scores of 310 and 318 on the par-72, 5,842-yard course at Apple Valley Golf Club to finish with a two-day total of 628. Defending champion DePauw finished second at 651, followed by Denison at 668.
The seven teams will re-convene Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, for NCAC Championship Series #2 at Springfield Country Club. The Tigers, the pre-tournament favorite, will be shooting to close out their first-ever NCAC title and the league's automatic NCAA Division III Tournament berth.
Four Wittenberg players finished in the top six in the 35-player field, starting with sophomore Macy Hubbard (Mason, Ohio/Mason). She carded rounds of 77 and 74 - the best of the tournament by any player - to claim a four-stroke victory over freshman Jane Hopkinson-Wood (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School), who finished with a two-round total of 155 after leading by one stroke after Saturday's opening round.
Junior Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) was next for Wittenberg as she placed fourth with a score of 160. Senior Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Perry) checked in at sixth with a 162 and senior Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) rounded things out for the Tigers in 17th place with a score of 175.
The winner of the annual four-round NCAC Championship Series earns the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament from May 12-15 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
