Tigers Win Laura Bump Invitational; Hopkinson-Wood Takes Medalist Honors
Wittenberg won by 32 strokes at the Laura Bump Invitational on Sunday, as the Tigers carded a 627 (+51) as a team. Wittenberg dominated the tournament, as the closest NCAC institution to Wittenberg was third place Wooster, who finished 49 strokes off the Tiger’s lead.
DELAWARE, Ohio—Wittenberg won by 32 strokes at the Laura Bump Invitational on Sunday, as the Tigers carded a 627 (+51) as a team. Wittenberg dominated the tournament, as the closest NCAC institution to Wittenberg was third place Wooster, who finished 49 strokes off the Tiger's lead. The 5,834-yard par 72 Mill Creek Golf Club was good to the Tigers, as Jane Hopkinson-Wood earned medalist honors with a two-day total of 141, three-under for the two-round, 11 team tournament.
Hopkinson-Wood tied a program record with an opening round 68 on Saturday, and then turned around and fired a one-over 73 on Sunday to secure another medalist honor, this time by ten strokes. The senior is now up to 14 medalist honors in her Tiger career, as the Pennsylvania native earned number 13 at the NCAC Fall Preview back in October.
"What a tremendous weekend from Jane. Being able to tie a program record is such a special achievement but to do in the conditions she faced is just unbelievable. I am so proud of her and the entire team's efforts this weekend," said first-year head coach Michael Leotta.
After round one, Madi Wolters sat five strokes behind Hopkinson-Wood in second place after an opening round 73. Wolters fired a round two score of 81 to finish the tournament at ten-over, and all-alone in third place individually. Right behind Wolters was Erin Adams, who overcame an opening round 86 to shoot up the leaderboard on Sunday with a second round of 77. Adams finished all-along in sixth place with a two-day total of 163 (+19).
"We talked a lot this week about narrowing our focus and controlling what we can control. I thought we did a great job this weekend in that aspect. Between the weather and delays it was a challenge but I'm proud of how our ladies played and competed," continued Leotta.
Brianna Yee, 164 (+20) and Kelli Fisher 165 (+21) also finished in the top-ten for Wittenberg. Yee finished T7, after carding round of 83 and 81. Fisher finished T9 after carding rounds of 81 and 84, as Wittenberg claimed their first tournament win of the Spring season. Megan Selby rounded out the Tigers group of top-20 performances, carding a two-day total of 168 (+24) to finish T16.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, April 14th at the Ashland Spring Invitational.
