Tigers Kick Off 2016 In Style With 17-10 Home Win Over John Carroll
Becca Joseph leads scoring barrage with six goals and two assists.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - One of the highest scoring teams in the nation in recent years picked up right where it left off as the Wittenberg Tigers blitzed visiting John Carroll for a 17-10 victory in their 2016 season opener.
Junior Becca Joseph (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula) sparked the scoring barrage, tallying six goals and also dishing out two assists, but she was hardly alone on the attack. A trio of Tigers scored three goals apiece in the game as Wittenberg outshot John Carroll by a 27-19 margin in the game.
The Tigers, who next head to Clearwater, Fla., for a pair of Spring Break games, got off to a strong start, outscoring the Blue Streaks 12-4 in the first half. The mushroomed to 17-5 midway through the second half before John Carroll scored five straight times to close the contest.
In addition to Joseph's six goals, sophomore Victoria Zysik (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg), senior Carrie Kubasta (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and senior Olivia Lash (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) each found the back of the net three times. Zysik and Lash also finished with one assist apiece.
Lash led in the ground balls category with seven, while Kubasta and Zysik added five each and sophomore Sarah Farnsworth (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Collegiate) chipped in with four. Zysik and freshman Emily Wadds (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming) were tops in draw controls with three each, while Kubasta and Lash finished with three caused turnovers apiece.
In goal, senior Katie Reuter (Cleveland, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) went the distance with seven saves.
