Bloomington, Illinois – The Wittenberg University Women's Lacrosse team opened its Spring Break trip in Illinois on Wednesday by dropping a 17-8 decision at Illinois Wesleyan. The Tigers currently stand at 1-3 on the season against non-conference opponents, with NCAC league play set to open on Saturday, March 16th at home against Oberlin.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the game as senior Madeline Stock found sophomore Josee Clayton for seventh goal of the young season. IWU than scored three-straight goals before freshman Antavia Horne broke the streak with an unassisted goal at the 18:02 mark to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Titans. It was back-and-fourth game over the next six minutes of game action, culminating with an unassisted goal from junior Rachel Bernard at the 12:16 mark to pull the Tigers within two, 6-4. However, the Titans ended the half on a 9-0 run to take a 15-4 lead into the break.
After IWU scored the first two goals of the second half to go up 17-4, Wittenberg scored the final four goals of the match, which included a pair of scores from Clayton in the final 10 minutes to close out the game.
Clayton led the Tigers with three goals on five total shots, while Stock added two goals and one assist on the day. In goal, freshman Joanna Stecz made three saves in 60 total minutes of action.
The Tigers will close out their Spring Break trip in Illinois on Friday (3/8) with a 12:00 p.m. contest at Augustana.
