Women’s Lacrosse Suffers a 15-5 Defeat on the Road Against Marietta
MARIETTA, OH. – Wittenberg's Women's Lacrosse couldn't keep up with Marietta and suffered its second loss of the season, 15-5, on the road at Marietta Field on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first period. Wittenberg tightened up its defense in the second, allowing just one goal that would give Marietta a 7-2 lead at the half. However, the Pioneers would continue their scoring barrage in the second half, putting five more on the board in the third and three in the fourth to land the big win.
Jarya Hassell (Bellbrook, OH / Bellbrook) and Aubrey Stager (Saline, MI / Saline) scored two goals apiece, and Elise Jantzen (Fairfield, OH / Fairfield) added one more for the Tigers.
Jantzen was the first to score off an assist by Hassell to tie things at 1-1 in the first period with 12:16 on the clock. Marietta answered with three quick goals to take the lead that would hold up the rest of the match.
Stager took two shots, two on goal and had five ground balls. She also had four caused turnovers and four draw controls. Hassell had six shots, five on goal, and added the only Tiger assist. Jantzen also had five ground balls. Essence Wyse (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) had five shots, four on goal.
Goalkeeper Makenna Ricketts (Chardon, OH / Chardon) collected 14 saves, a career-high for the sophomore.
With the loss, Wittenberg goes to 0-2 on the season, while Marietta picks up its first win of the season to even its record at 1-1.
