Tigers Grab First Win of Season Over Muskingum
Springfield, OH - Wittenberg Women's Lacrosse secured its first win of the season in dominating fashion, defeating Muskingum 17-12 on Wednesday evening, March 18, at Edwards-Maurer Field. The win was the first for Head Coach Daniel Shields, who is in his first season at the helm of the program, as well.
The Tigers came out strong in the opening quarter, using a balanced offensive attack to build an early 5-2 advantage. Alyssa Burnside (Hilliard, OH / Bradley) led the early charge with two goals, one being within the first minute of the game, while Jarya Hassell (Bellbrook, OH / Bellbrook) and Essence Wyse (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) added key scores to give Wittenberg early momentum.
The Tigers continued to apply pressure into the second quarter, extending its lead to 10-6 by halftime. Hassell played a major role in the offensive surge against the Muskies, contributing to multiple goals and assists, while Aubrey Stager (Saline, MI / Saline) and Sophia Meek (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy Orange) helped facilitate scoring opportunities. Despite a push from Muskingum, the Tigers consistently responded, maintaining control of the game and capitalizing on free-position chances taken by Hannah Richardson (North Farmington, MI / Farmington Hills) to keep their lead intact.
Wittenberg carried the momentum through the second half, holding off several Muskingum runs to secure the five-goal victory. Hassell delievered a standout performance, leading the team offensively and adding a late assist to cap off the scoring. Contributions across the lineup, including goals from Wyse, Stager, Maren Raymond (Louisville, KY / Ballard), and Elise Jantzen (Fairfield, OH / Fairfield), highlighted Wittenberg's depth. With the win, the Tigers build confidence moving forward as they look to carry this momentum into their next contest against Trine.
Goalkeeper Makenna Ricketts (Chardon, OH / Chardon) collected 6 saves on 18 shots.
