Denison Pulls Away Early in 24–2 NCAC Win Over Wittenberg
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Wittenberg Women's Lacrosse was unable to overcome a fast start from sixth-ranked Denison University, falling 24–2 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action Wednesday afternoon at Edwards-Maurer Field.
Denison seized control from the opening whistle, scoring consistently throughout the first quarter and building a 9–0 lead after 15 minutes. The Big Red continued to pressure the Tigers in the second quarter, adding five more goals to carry a 14–0 advantage into the break.
The visitors maintained their momentum in the third quarter, extending the margin with five additional goals to make it 19–0 heading into the final period.
Wittenberg found the scoresheet late in the fourth quarter. Aubrey Stager (Saline, MI / Saline) opened the Tigers' scoring with an even-strength goal off a feed from Jarya Hassell (Bellbrook, OH / Bellbrook), and Hassell followed moments later with an unassisted tally to close out the home side's offense.
Hassell finished with a goal and an assist to lead Wittenberg, while Stager added a goal and paced the Tigers with four ground balls and four draw controls. Essence Wyse (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) generated two shots, one on goal, as the Tigers looked to create offensive opportunities late.
In goal, Makenna Ricketts (Chardon, OH / Chardon) played all 60 minutes, recording 13 saves while facing sustained pressure throughout the contest. Defensively, Maggie Pickrel (Centerville, OH / Centerville) registered two caused turnovers, and the Tigers continued to battle despite the early deficit.
