SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers bounced back from a tough opening weekend at the Messiah Classic, recording Head Coach Kwame Lloyd's first win since taking over the program with a 4-0 whitewashing of visiting Wilmington.
The loss was Wilmington's first of the season to drop the Quakers to 1-1-2 on the young season. Wittenberg improved to 1-2, heading into a busy home weekend that includes games both Saturday and Sunday at Edwards-Maurer Field.
A first start was the key for Wittenberg, starting with a goal in the seventh minute by senior Sheryl Chambers (Victorville, Calif./St. Joan of Arc). Midway through the first half, the Tigers broke the game open with two goals in less than three minutes, starting with a tally from freshman Cassandra Howell () at the 26:34 mark and ending with a score from junior Kailey Striebel (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) at the 29:03 mark. Striebel, who assisted on the first two goals, put the finishing touches on the win with a score in the 75th minute.
The game was played in miserable weather conditions thanks to a steady, cold rain. The Tigers handled the conditions exceedingly well in the first half, outshooting the visitors 12-2 and attempting five corner kicks to Wilmington's two. In the second half, the Quakers turned the tables, recording five more shots and four more corner kicks, but junior goalkeeper Cassie Lythjohan (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) was up to the task, making four of her six saves over the final 45 minutes.
Twenty different Tigers saw action in the game, with eight players attempting a shot. Striebel put all five of her shots on frame, while each of Howell's three attempts were on target as well.
