After scoring a goal just 16 seconds into the match, the Wittenberg women's soccer team held on through the remaining 89:44 Wednesday to capture a 1-0 win over Oberlin and move to 5-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — After scoring a goal just 16 seconds into the match, the Wittenberg women's soccer team held on through the remaining 89:44 Wednesday to capture a 1-0 win over Oberlin and move to 5-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).
Junior Kailey Striebel (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) found the net from 25 yards just 16 seconds after the match began, striking for the program's fastest goal since at least 2000. Detailed game-by-game statistics for prior seasons were not immediately available.
The Tigers played airtight defense through the rest of the match, led by five saves from junior goalkeeper Cassie Lythjohan (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and helped by one team save to preserve the shutout, Lythjohan's fourth of the season.
In front of Lythjohan, the Wittenberg defense limited Oberlin to 10 shots, thanks in large part to reliable defense coming off the bench. The effort included contributions from freshman Mary Clare Yerke (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and senior Kristi Burkitt (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson).
Striebel led the offense with the only goal and a team-high five shots, followed by three from senior Sheryl Chambers (Victorville, Calif./St. Joan of Arc) and senior Taylor Goss (Sandy Spring, Md./Friends School).
