Capital Snatches Decision In Final Five Minutes

The match was a close one on Wednesday night at Edwards-Maurer Field, but visiting Capital scored in the 86th minute against the Wittenberg women’s soccer team to steal a 1-0 decision.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The match was a close one on Wednesday night at Edwards-Maurer Field, but visiting Capital scored in the 86th minute against the Wittenberg women's soccer team to steal a 1-0 decision.

The Tigers played a strong match the entire way, but nevertheless moved to 3-4-1 overall with the loss, while 22nd-ranked Capital improved to 5-1-1 on the season.

Wittenberg outshot the Crusaders by a 24-18 margin and took four corner kicks compared to Capital's two, forcing the visiting goalkeeper into 11 saves while Tiger freshman Kelsey Lorko (Fairview Park, Ohio/Fairview) posted five stops.

Junior Tobie Weston (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Christian) shot six times to lead the Tiger lineup, followed by senior Kayla Murphy (Dayton, Ohio/Stebbins) with five shots and junior Chelsey Marcum (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and freshman Michelle Brunswick (Middletown, Ohio/Madison) with three apiece.

The Tigers continue an extensive stretch of non-conference games with the ninth of 10 to start the season on Sunday, Sept. 22, when they travel to Mount St. Joseph for a 2 p.m. match. After visiting Heidelberg on Wednesday, Sept. 25, North Coast Athletic Conference competition begins when Oberlin comes to Springfield on Saturday, Sept. 28, for a Noon contest.
