SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - A strong singles performance, keyed by a gutsy come-from-behind win, fueled a narrow 5-4 Wittenberg win over Cedarville in a match played at Springfield Racquet Club.
The win moved Wittenberg back above .500 at 6-5 overall. It was the Tigers' 2007-08 non-conference finale, serving as a tune-up for three more North Coast Athletic Conference matches and the conference tournament April 25-27.
The big win for the Tigers came at No. 2 singles, where freshman Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) notched a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win. That gave the Tigers a 4-2 singles advantage, which came in handy as the Yellow Jackets scored two wins in the three doubles matches to nearly pull off a rally. The normal order of play was inverted, with singles going before doubles.
Junior Kat Sundstrom (Trafalgar, Ind./North Central), sophomore Emily Nash (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) and sophomore Sean Delaney (Powell, Ohio/Worthington Christian) were also singles winners with straight-set victories at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 respectively. The clinching doubles point was provided by freshman Elizabeth Micheletti (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and junior Allison Earhart (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) at the No. 3 position.
