Tigers Keep Rolling With Win Over Walsh
The Wittenberg women's tennis team moved to 9-3 on the season after a win over visiting Walsh University by a convincing 6-3 margin.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg women's tennis team moved to 9-3 on the season after a win over visiting Walsh University by a convincing 6-3 margin.
The Tigers claimed wins at the second and third doubles positions, as both pairs remained undefeated on the 2008-09 season. Freshman Maggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) and senior Allison Earhart (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) moved to 8-0 on the season by winning their pro set 8-4 at the No. 2 position. The duo of sophomoreJayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and freshman Jackie Stevens (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) also moved to 8-0 by defeated their opponents 8-3 at the No. 3 spot. The battle at first doubles was long and hard fought, but senior Kat Sundstrom (Trafalgar, Ind./North Central) and junior Sean Delaney (Powell, Ohio/Worthington Christian) lost in a tiebreaker, 8-6.
Wittenberg rounded things out with four wins in six tries in the singles event. Tigers claiming victories were Miely, junior Emily Nash (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), freshman Alex Cummins (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie) and Stevens.
Head Coach Justin Stuckey and his team will dive into the North Coast Athletic Conference with preseason favorite and nationally ranked Denison at home at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 31. It has been more than a month since the Tigers lost a match, with eight straight victories providing momentum heading into the NCAC title chase.
