HILTON HEAD, SC — The warm ocean breezes agreed with the Wittenberg Tigers, who came up with a pair of 9-0 wins over Catholic University of America and Seton Hill on Day 1 of their stay on Hilton Head Island.
Coupled with their 8-1 win over Johnson C. Smith a day earlier, the Tigers have moved to a season-best two games over .500 at 5-3 on the 2009-10 season.
Numerous Wittenberg players enjoyed perfect days on the Hilton Head courts, starting with sophomore Anne Beauch (North Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) at No. 1 singles and doubles. She was the only Tiger player seriously threatened in the win over Catholic before pulling out a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles with seniorEmily Nash (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson). Nash added a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
Junior Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and sophomore Jackie Stevens (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) were the team's other two double-winners against Catholic. Miely dropped just one game between No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, matching Stevens at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles.
The Seton Hill match was originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 10, but the Tigers adapted well. Beauch was again a double-winners, but Head Coach Justin Stuckey worked a lot of different players into the rest of the lineup, meaning a total of 11 different players saw action in the total team victory.
Wittenberg gets back to work Wednesday with a match against St. Lawrence at 6 p.m.
