SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers returned home to the friendly confines of Albright Tennis Complex on a sun-drenched afternoon, but visiting Walsh spoiled an otherwise perfect afternoon with a 5-4 victory.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 7-5 on the season, heading into a week of rest and practice before heading to North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Wooster for a non-conference match.
As it turned out, the match that ultimately decided the entire competition was the first one of the day as Walsh won a hard-fought 9-7 decision at No. 1 doubles. After taking a 2-1 lead into the singles matches, Walsh then held on for a 3-3 split to pick up a 5-4 overall win.
Sophomore Alexandra Cummins (Lebanon, Ohio/New Dixie) was the Tigers' lone double-winner on the day as she teamed with sophomore Maggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) to win at No. 3 doubles, 8-5, before rallying for an improbable three-set win at No. 4 singles. In that match, Cummins faced a doube-match point in the second set, but she won the last three games to force a tiebreaker to decide the match, which she then won 10-5.
Other singles winners for the Tigers were junior Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) in three sets at No. 2 singles and senior Emily Nash (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) at No. 3 singles.
