GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers split a pair of matches on Day 1 of the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship Tournament, hosted by Denison, falling to Allegheny in the morning before rallying past Earlham in the afternoon.
As a result, the Tigers, the second-place finisher from the West Division, will play for fifth place on Saturday morning against the winner of the Friday afternoon match between Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster. Wittenberg's record is now 11-9 overall.
The loss to Allegheny was essentially sealed on the doubles courts as the Gators came up with a three-court sweep. The match was over with the first three singles results as the Gators won at No. 2 and No. 6. Wittenberg's lone point came from sophomore Alexandra Cummins (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie), who was a 6-3, 6-1 victor at the No. 4 position.
A few hours later, the Tigers turned the tables on Earlham, taking all three doubles courts by decisive margins, including sophomore Jackie Stevens (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) and junior Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) with an 8-0 win at No. 2 after losing in a tiebreaker to Allegheny.
Wittenberg needed just two singles wins and Cummins and freshman Kristin Wright (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) supplied them at the No. 4 and 6 positions, respectively.
