Tigers Open 2009-10 Season With Split Against ODU, Wilmington

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers produced mixed results as they lifted the lid on the 2009-10 season, splitting a pair of home matches against Ohio Dominican and Wilmington.
After falling 6-3 to Ohio Dominican in a match that started at 10 a.m., the Panthers played a long match against Wilmington. As a result, the match between Wittenberg and Wilmington slated to begin at 2 p.m. didn't end until 10 p.m. The Tigers finally captured a 5-4 decision.
Against ODU, the Tigers won two of the three doubles matches, including a 9-8 win at No. 2 doubles by sophomore Jackie Stevens (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) and junior Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington). However, Wittenberg lost five of the six singles matches, salvaging only a win at No. 6 singles by sophomoreMaggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat).
The long, busy opening day was capped with a heartstopping 5-4 win. Again, the Tigers took two of the three doubles competitions, but the two teams split the six singles matches. Wilmington managed to make things interesting with a pair of tiebreakers wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, but the Tigers had already accumulated enough points thanks to singles wins by senior Emily Nash (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) at No. 1, Stevens at No. 3 and freshman Kristin Wright (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) at No. 6.
