Tigers Calm Quakers 8-1 On The Road To Open Season

WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Wittenberg women's tennis team opened the 2010-11 season in style Tuesday with a convincing 8-1 victory over Wilmington on the road. The Tigers start the new campaign with a freshly minted 1-0 overall record.
Freshman Leah Ann Miller (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) and senior Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) started things off with a straight-sets win at No. 1 doubles, and the win set the pace for the rest of the match.
Junior Anne Beauch (North Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) and freshmanEmma Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./Vigo) took an 8-5 win as second doubles while junior Alexandra Cummins (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie) and junior Maggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) won 8-1 in the third slot.
The Tigers dropped their only matchup at third singles, where Beauch lost a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 contest. Miller took a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win in first singles, followed by Miely's 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2. No. 4 Cummins was a 6-0, 6-2 winner and juniorJackie Stevens (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) matched her results in the fifth spot. Stewart rounded things out with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles.
The Tigers next hit the courts on Saturday, Sept. 18, with their first home match of the fall when they host Otterbein at Noon.
