Danne, Harper Headline Day One of NCAC Outdoor Championships
Gambier, OH - After hosting the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships this year, the Tigers got off to a solid start in the NCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Kenyon.
The Tigers kicked off the championships with a win in the heptathlon last weekend at Denison, and Wittenberg maintained its momentum on Friday. After the first day at Kenyon, the Tigers are in fourth place with 33 points. John Carroll is in first with 54 points, followed by DePauw with 46, and Ohio Wesleyan rounds out the top three with 41. The women kicked off Day 1 of the championships with a great start in the field events, as freshman Kerrington Harper (Mason, OH / Mason) took third in the long jump with a leap of 5.48 meters, just 0.3 meters short of the program record, and Cayla Eaton (North Lewisburg, OH / Triad) added herself to the top 10 list with a leap of 5.40 meters and a fifth-place finish. In the prelims of the 800 meters, Abbey Danne (Johnstown, OH / Big Walnut) took first in a time of 2:17.33, good enough for a top 10 time in program history.
In the first running event of the day, the 10,000 meter run, Maddi Clark (Mentor, OH / Mentor) was seventh as she finished in 38:27.89, as she adds her name to the top 10 in Wittenberg history. In the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles, Eaton had another good finish, taking fifth in 15.18 seconds, just over two-tenths of a second from the school record.
The Tigers will look to continue placing well in the running finals tomorrow, along with more field events on day two of the NCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Kenyon.
