The No. 6 seed Kalamazoo Hornets, champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, pulled off the first upset of the 2002 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional on Thursday by defeating No. 3 seed Muskingum College, tournament champion of the Ohio Athletic Conference.
The Hornets won the first, third and fifth games, each time doing it with solid blocking and more offensive efficiency than their opponents. Most impressively, Kalamazoo rallied to win the fifth game convincingly after giving up a six-point lead late in Game 4 to allow Muskingum to stay alive. The Hornets had five players reach double figures in kills, led by Emily Trahan. Trahan also topped the team in assists with 47, and she ranked second with 23 digs. Carrie Brankiewicz led the team defensively with 27 digs and also added three service aces.
Muskingum ends its season despite a number of outstanding performances. Leading the charge on offense was Jami Cooksey, who finished with 21 kills and an attack percentage of .381. Jessica Mayer added 53 assists, while Jen Shay topped the team with 24 digs.
