Wittenberg Wraps Up Wittenberg Fall Classic With Fourth Straight Win
Since losing for the first time in eight years in North Coast Athletic Conference action nearly a month ago, the Wittenberg Tigers have reeled off 11 consecutive victories, including four straight in the Wittenberg Fall Classic. The Tigers put the wraps on a nearly perfect weekend with a 3-1 victory over Carnegie Mellon in the final match of the tournament.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Since losing for the first time in eight years in North Coast Athletic Conference action nearly a month ago, the Wittenberg Tigers have reeled off 11 consecutive victories, including four straight in the Wittenberg Fall Classic. The Tigers put the wraps on a nearly perfect weekend with a 3-1 victory over Carnegie Mellon in the final match of the tournament.
Wittenberg, ranked No. 6 in the nation and No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region, improved to 27-4 overall heading into the final week of regular season action. The Tigers wrap up the regular season with a road match at Oberlin on Tuesday, followed on Friday and Saturday by the four-team NCAC Tournament, which for the first time since 1996 will be played someplace other than Springfield. Hiram will host the tournament after finishing the NCAC regular season with a perfect record.
Against Carnegie Mellon, the Tigers struggled to a 30-26 loss in Game 1 but bounced back to win the next three games with relative ease, 30-22, 30-15, 30-21. For the weekend, Wittenberg won 12 of 13 games.
Senior middle hitter Emily Dixon had a big match, finishing with seven blocks. Senior Linda Young led offensively with 12 kills, followed by freshman Jackie Williams with nine kills and sophomore Emily Bell with eight kills. Freshman Laura Fender did her usual fine work, finishing with 30 digs, while sophomore Sarah Matesich topped the team with three aces.
