GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan—#6 Wittenberg women's volleyball opened up NCAA play at Calvin college on Thursday, as the Tigers squared off against the Bison of Bethany College. The Bison earned a spot in the regional via a 3-1 victory over Thomas More in the PAC Tournament Championship, as the team had not dropped a match since September 30. The Tigers came out of the gates slow, but regrouped and handled Bethany in straight sets; 26-24, 25-19, 25-22. The 3-0 victory for the Tigers earns the team from Springfield a semifinal match with Millikin tomorrow afternoon at 4:30PM. Millikin opened up play at the Calvin regional earlier on Thursday, downing Ohio Northern University in five sets.

MATCH NOTES

  • Camila Quiñones and Maddie Fischer each slugged 12 kills each against the Bison, leading Wittenberg.
  • Aubrey Cox helped pace the Tigers offense with nine kills, as the freshman was poised all match for the Tigers, leading Wittenberg with a .471 kill-percentage on the day.
  • Despite the slow start, the Tigers managed to garnish a kill-percentage of .349 in the match, producing only nine attack-errors against Bethany.
  • Madison Manger paced the Tiger defense, as the sophomore fought hard for 14 digs in the NCAA Regional.
  • Sophomore setter Karen Wildemann earned 41 assists in the match, coming up seven assists short of her career high 48, which was coincidentally reached against fellow regional opponent Carnegie Mellon on October 29.

AVCA ALL-REGION TEAM

  • While Wittenberg focuses on the NCAA Tournament, the AVCA handed out their regional awards today, as a trio of Tigers landed themselves on the Great Lakes Squad.
  • Cox and Fischer earned top honors, while Wildemann was named Honorable Mention.
  • Named the NCAC Newcomer of the Year a week ago, Cox earned another honor on Thursday, this time from the AVCA, as the Tipp City, Ohio native was named the Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year.
