Tigers Beat Ursuline, Heidelberg For First-Ever Program Wins
SPRINGFIELD, OH/TIFFIN, OH - After a challenging start to its inaugural season as an intercollegiate program, Wittenberg Flag Football kept it positive and bounced back from a series of losses to some of the top-ranked teams in NAIA to record a pair of victories. The weekend started with a 13-12 Senior Recognition Day victory over Ursuline on Saturday in The Steemer, and the next day the Tigers hit the road to pick up a 31-0 win at Heidelberg.
The wins were the first in program history, as well as the coaching career of Chris Johnson, Wittenberg's first-year head man.
"Our girls took another step from our win yesterday and dominated today's game," Johnson said. "We said at halftime we wanted a shutout, and they made it happen."
Against Heidelberg, the shutout was highlighted by four interceptions, including two by Karley Moore (Tipp City, OH / Bethel) and one each from Cadence Boyd (Cincinnati, OH / Monroe) and Abby Holman (Loveland, OH / Loveland). Moore also made "several touchdown-saving plays," according to Johnson. Their work on the back end of the defense was made possible by the great rushing pressure provided by Nyla Richardson (Cincinnati, OH / Oak Hills), who was credited with three pass deflections and three tackles for loss.
Offensively against the Student Princes, Natalie Cappa (Cincinnati, OH / Reading) scored three touchdowns and Boyd had one, all originating from quarterback Gabby Moore (Springfield, OH / Springfield).
In the win against Ursuline, Richardson had three tackles for loss, three sacks, and a pass break-up. Moore and Rachel Hartman (Columbus, OH / Grandview) scored the Tigers' touchdowns, both from Moore.
Next up is a four-game weekend trip to Siena Heights April 17-18. The Tigers will take on Cumberlands, Purdue Northwest, St. Francis, and a club team from the University of Michigan.
