WOOSTER, Ohio – For the second straight week, the Wittenberg men's lacrosse team came painfully close to its first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory of the 2013 season. However, after losing in overtime at home to Kenyon on March 23, the Tigers dropped another heartbreaker, this time on the road to Wooster.
Wittenberg now stands 4-3 overall, including a mark of 0-2 in the NCAC. Wooster improved to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
The Scots jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the second quarter and maintained a 5-3 advantage through halftime. Wittenberg battled back in the third stanza, moving ahead with 3:32 remaining on a goal by freshman Andrew Fuss (New Albany, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) off a feed from his brother Thomas Fuss (New Albany, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln). However, Wooster responded with a three-goal burst to take a 9-7 lead, and the Scots held the Tigers off until just 10 seconds remained, when senior Alex Previte (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) finally broke through for a goal.
Wittenberg held a 35-32 advantage in shots in the game, although Wooster led in ground balls 32-29, and the Scots enjoyed a wide margin in face-offs, winning 15 of the 21 contested.
Individually, Andrew Fuss and Previte finished with two goals apiece, while sophomore Lewis Thompson (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) added one goal and one assist. Freshman TJ Smith (Atlanta, Ga./The Marist School) and sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Langer (New York, N.Y./Salisbury School) shared team honors in ground balls with four apiece. Langer was credited with 11 saves in the game.
