Wittenberg
WINTER HAVEN, FL – Wittenberg Softball had another successful day, notching two more wins on Monday, March 9, during Day 2 of The Spring Games at DiamondPlex in Winter Haven, Florida, this time beating Dominican University, 2-1, and Albertus Magnus, 7-3.
Two runs were all it took in game one for the Tigers to post the victory behind the strong pitching of Phoebe Underwood (Seymour, IN / Seymour) and Lilly James (Troy, OH / Troy). Underwood went four innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run. She walked one and struck out one to pick up her first win and even her record at 1-1 on the season. James picked up her first save of the season, pitching in three innings and giving up one hit and a walk while striking out four.
Wittenberg scored both its runs in the first inning on a couple of errors by the Stars. Meghan McCans (Arcanum, OH / Arcanum) walked, then Gada Bryant (Westville, IL / Bismarck-Henning) reached first on an error by the shortstop that moved McCans to third. Bekah Giel (Westville, IL / Bismarck-Henning) made it to first on an error by the pitcher that allowed McCans to score. Giel then came home on a grounder to third by Kirsten Wright (Springfield, OH / Kenton Ridge). Both runs were unearned. It was the first time in three tries all-time that Wittenberg defeated Dominican.
The bats got a little busier, and the pitching continued to be on par in game two, as the Tigers rolled to a 7-3 victory behind the arms of Lilly Shaw (Washington Courthouse, OH / Washington), Underwood, and James. Shaw went 2.1 innings, Underwood went 1.2, and James pitched the last three to pick up her first win of the season after the Tigers put a five-spot on the board in the sixth inning.
The Tigers scored two in the first and led until the fifth inning when the Falcons answered with three to go up 3-2. Witt's bats caught fire in the sixth after a couple of errors, and timely walks lit the spark. Rowan Goodpasture (Wabash, IN / Southwood) and Shyann Beddow (Kearns, UT / Kearns) each had an RBI, while Ava Cyphers (Dayton, OH / Vandalia Butler) doubled for two more in the inning.
Wittenberg outhit Albertus Magnus 11-5 with McCans and Bailey Nichols (Tucson, AZ / Sabino) each getting two hits and McCans and Bryant each scoring two runs. Bryant and Kayla Drake (Wilmington, OH / Clinton-Massie) drove in the other two runs in the first inning to cap off the scoring.
With the wins, the Tigers go to 3-1 on the season. Dominican is 1-6, and Albertus Magnus is 1-2.
