Alma
ADA, OH – After losing to Alma for the second-straight day, Wittenberg Softball ended a three-game skid by defeating Ohio Northern University, 6-3, in a late game to earn a split on the day at the Ohio Northern University Invitational at the Durbin-Hileman Stadium in Ada, Ohio, on Sunday, March 22.
Alma College, annually one of the best teams in the Great Lakes Region, came out tough against Wittenberg for the second-straight day, this time topping the Tigers, 13-2, in five innings to improve to 12-2 on the season after going undefeated in the weekend invitational.
Wittenberg scored one run in each of the second and third innings, while Alma put a six-spot on the board in the second inning, scored two more in the third, and added five in the fourth to secure the victory.
Wittenberg scored two runs on three hits, with Gada Bryant (Westville, IL / Bismarck-Henning), Kayla Drake (Wilmington, OH / Clinton-Massie), and Kirsten Wright (Springfield, OH / Kenton Ridge) each getting a hit in the game. Wright had a double and an RBI, while Drake drove in the other Tiger run.
Meghan McCans (Arcanum, OH / Arcanum) and Bailey Nichols (Tucson, AZ / Sabino) each scored a run and had a stolen base against Alma. Lilly Shaw (Washington Courthouse, OH / Washington) took the loss on the mound and is 0-1 on the season.
The Tigers got back to their winning ways by doubling up Ohio Northern in game two, posting a 6-3 win to improve to 8-6 on the season.
After ONU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, the Tiger bats came to life, pushing a run across the plate in the second, then two more in the third to tie things at 3-all. They got three more runs in the sixth inning to post the big win. Witt scored six runs on 13 hits while allowing just three runs on three hits.
Several Tigers had a good game at the plate, including McCans, who went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, Bryant, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Drake, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Ava Cyphers (Dayton, OH / Vandalia Butler), who was 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Lilly James (Troy, OH / Troy) came on in relief of Julie Hall (Powell, OH / Bishop Watterson) in the first inning. She pitched 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits and three walks, while striking out two to post her second win of the season.

Wittenberg will travel to Muskingum for a doubleheader on March 24, with games taking place at 3 and 5 p.m.
