Tiger Offense Sputters Late in Doubleheader Losses to Heidelberg
SPRINGFIELD, OH - Wittenberg Softball hosted the Heidelberg Student Princes for a doubleheader at Betty Doughman Dillahunt Field after winning their last two games in a weekend series against Ohio Wesleyan. The Tigers dropped game one by a score of 5-2 and gave up the same amount of runs in game two, also losing that game, 5-3.
Game One
In game one, the Tigers scored first as Bekah Giel (Amelia, OH / West Clermont) singled to drive in Meghan McCans (Arcanum, OH / Arcanum) in the first inning. Heidelberg then answered immediately, taking a 2-1 lead with a two-run second inning. Both teams were held scoreless in their half-innings before freshman Emma Lohri (Heath, OH / Newark Catholic) blasted a home run over the left field wall to tie the game at two. Once again, Heidelberg answered right back with a five-run top of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. In the fifth, Lilly Shaw (Washington Courthouse, OH / Washington) was put in to relieve Julie Hall (Powell, OH / Bishop Watterson), and tossed an inning of no-hit ball before Lilly James (Troy, OH / Troy) did the same over the final inning and two-thirds. Even though the relievers were near perfect, Wittenberg's inability to drive in a run over the last three innings led to their first loss of the day, 5-2. Hall ultimately was given the loss in game one, falling to 4-4 on the season.
Game Two
The first inning of game one started with both teams being held scorless before the Student Princes took Tiger starter Phoebe Underwood (Seymour, IN / Seymour) deep twice in the top of the second, driving in three runs to take the lead. The Tigers threatened in the second as Kennedy Reed (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy Orange) walked with one out, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and eventually scored on a throwing error as the Heidelberg cather tried to throw her out at third. The next two Tiger batters walked, but were unable to score as the inning ended on a gorundout. The very next half inning, Heidelberg then went back up by three on a base hit, floowed by an error that led another run to score, going up 4-1. In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers looked like they had the recipe for a comeback. Gada Bryant (Westville, IL / Bismark-Henning) singled home Kirsten Wright (Springfield, OH / Kenton Ridge), but got thrown out trying to advance to second on the throw home. Ava Cyphers (Dayton, OH / Vandalia Butler) then added another run as she drove in Kyleigh Bartlett (Beavercreek, OH / Beavercreek) to cut the lead to 4-3. After those two runs, the Student Princes were able to get out of the inning. THe next inning, James entered and got out of the inning three up and three down. Lohri led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, which led Heidelberg to insert their winning pitcher from game one, who didn't allow the Tigers to record a single hit for the remainder of the game. The Student Princes scored once more on a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth for the last run of the game to make the final score 5-3. The game two loss went to Underwood as she is now at .500 with a 5-5 record.
