GAMBIER, OH – It's two more North Coach Athletic Conference (NCAC) victories for Wittenberg Softball as the Tigers swept Kenyon in a doubleheader on the road on Saturday, April 11, at the Kenyon College Softball Complex.
Wittenberg jumped ahead early in both games, going up 6-0 after two innings in game one and holding on for a 9-6 victory, then grabbing a 10-0 advantage after three innings in game two, en route to the 11-2 win. With the wins, the Tigers improve to 15-11 overall and 5-1 in the NCAC, while Kenyon drops to 14-16 and 3-3 on the season.
In game one, the Tigers came out of the gate swinging, putting three runs on the board in each of the first and second innings. They added two more in the third and pushed across an insurance run in the seventh, crossing the plate nine times on 16 total hits.
Meghan McCans (Arcanum, OH / Arcanum) had a big day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. Gada Bryant (Westville, IL / Bismarck-Henning) was 3-for-3 with a triple, four RBI, and two runs scored, while Bekah Giel (Amelia, OH / West Clermont) and Kennedy Reed (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy Orange) each went 2-for-4. Giel had a double, two RBI, and scored a run, while Reed also doubled and scored two runs. McCans led the team in stolen bases with two, and Bryant, Ava Cyphers (Dayton, OH / Vandalia Butler), and Reed each added another.
Julie Hall (Powell, OH / Bishop Watterson) tallied the win on the mound to pick up her fifth of the season. Lilly Shaw (Washington Courthouse, OH / Washington) picked up her first save of the season.
In game two, the Tiger bats continued to be on fire. Witt scored three in the first and put a six-spot on the board in the third for a total of 11 runs on 12 hits, while holding Kenyon to just two runs that crossed the plate in the third inning. Four of the six runs in the third inning came across the plate on a grand slam to left field by Giel, who also scored two runs in the big win.
Bryant, Cyphers, Emma Lohri (Heath, OH / Newark Catholic), and Reed each had two hits in the game. Bryant knocked in two and scored three, and Reed had two RBI and scored another. Lohri also scored two, and McCans landed a triple. Bryant led the team in stolen bases with three, Cyphers, Giel, and Reed each had two, and Lohri and Samantha Cracas (Avon Lake, OH / Avon) had one apiece.
Phoebe Underwood (Seymour, IN / Seymour) picked up her sixth win of the season on the mound in game two.
