Tigers Split Midweek Matchup with Comets
Springfield, OH - Wittenberg Softball hosted the Capital Comets at Betty Doughman Dillahunt Field, looking to build on their undefeated weekend after sweeping Kenyon and John Carroll. The first game didn't go the Tigers' way, however, as they were defeated in run rule fashion by a 16-4 score in five innings. In game two, Wittenberg fought back from an early deficit to pull out an 8-3 win to even up the doubleheader at 1-1. With each team taking a loss, the Tigers move to 18-12 on the season and the Comets are now 14-12.
Game One
In game one, the Tigers' starting lineup consisted of primarily underclassmen, as many players who haven't seen a lot of action this year were able to take the field along with a few regular starters as well. The Comets jumped out to a quick lead, scoring 11 total runs in the second and third innings combined.
With the Tigers trailing by 11, Kennedy Reed (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy Orange) singled up the middle to score Rowan Goodpasture (Wabash, IN / Southwood) for the first Wittenberg run of the day. In the top of the fourth, Capital scored another five runs to go up 16-1 heading to the Tiger half of the fourth. The Tigers looked like they were on the path to a possible comeback as Ava Cyphers (Dayton, OH / Vandalia Butler) went yard on the first pitch of the inning before a single from Bailey Nichols (Tuscon, AZ / Sabino) drove in another two runs in Meghan McCans (Arcanum, OH / Arcanum) and Emma Lohri (Heath, OH / Newark Catholic), cutting the score to 16-4. Unfortunately, the inning stalled there and both teams were held scoreless in the fifth inning, and with the Tigers trailing by more than 10, the Comets took home a 12 run, run-rule victory, giving the loss to Wittenberg starting pitcher, Sophie Newsom (Worthington, OH / Thomas Worthington).
Game Two
The Tigers struck first in game two with a sacrifice fly from Cyphers that scored McCans. Both teams went scoreless in the second inning, but Capital wasn't done, scoring three runs in the third before Julie Hall (Powell, OH / Bishop Watterson) was able to work herself out of a jam. The Tigers answered right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, beginning with a bunt single from Bekah Giel (Amelia, OH / West Clermont) that scored McCans and Cyphers followed that up with her second homer of the day to add another two runs to the scoreboard and take the team lead in homers in the season.
The Tigers weren't done scoring as Giel singled again to score not only McCans, but Shyann Beddow (Kearns, UT / Kearns) as well to put Wittenberg up 6-3. The Tigers added another run in the fifth as Lohri stole second base and Samantha Cracas (Avon Lake, OH / Avon) advanced on the throw to make the Tiger total seven. Lilly James (Troy, OH / Troy) entered the game in the sixth with two outs and slammed the door with a strikeout for the final out of the inning. The Tigers then made the score 8-3 as Cyphers added another RBI with a sacrifice fly to score McCans for her fourth run scored of the game. James ended the game striking out two more batters in the top of the seventh and getting a flyout to end the game. Hall was credited with the win in game to, her record improving to 6-4 on the season.
The Tigers will host another doubleheader on Saturday, as they are scheduled to take on conference foe DePauw, with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
