WILMINGTON, OH – Wittenberg Softball dominated game one, before dropping game two in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 29, on the road at Wilmington College in non-conference action. The Tiger bats were on fire in game one as they rolled to a 10-1 victory in five innings, then lost in game two, 12-8.
Wittenberg scored 10 runs on 12 hits while Tiger pitchers held the Quakers to just one run on four hits in game one. After scoring three runs in the first inning, the Tigers opened the floodgates in the fourth, putting six runs on the board. Doubles off the bats of Bekah Giel (Amelia, OH / West Clermont) and Shyann Beddow (Kearns, UT / Kearns) were the big hits in the game, with each plating two runs.
Giel again led the team in RBIs with three total, going 2-for-4 in the game and scoring two runs. Meghan McCans (Arcanum, OH / Arcanum) was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk, and two runs scored. Kennedy Reed (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy Orange) was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Kirsten Wright (Springfield, OH / Kenton Ridge) was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a double, while Gada Bryant (Westville, IL / Bismarck-Henning) was also 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Bailey Nichols (Tucson, AZ / Sabino) was 1-for-3 with a run scored, and Ava Cyphers (Dayton, OH / Vandalia Butler) was 1-for-1 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI. Bryant and Giel each had two stolen bases, and McCans and Cyphers added one apiece.
Julie Hall (Powell, OH / Bishop Watterson) pitched three innings and gave up a run on one hit and a walk to tally her 10th win of the season, tying her win total of last season. Lilly Shaw (Washington Courthouse, OH / Washington) pitched two scoreless innings with a walk and a strikeout.
In game two, Wilmington jumped out to a 5-0 lead and made it 6-0 after three innings. The Tigers finally got on the board, plating three runs in the fourth inning, cutting the lead to 6-3. But the Quaker bats were hot as they added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, and two more came across to score in the fifth. Wittenberg added five more runs, but that was the closest it would come. The Tigers had eight runs on 13 hits to 12 runs on 13 hits for Wilmington.
Cyphers and Nichols each had three hits and two RBI in the game, while Bryant, Giel, and Emma Lohri (Heath, OH / Newark Catholic) each added two apiece. Cyphers, who had a triple, also scored three runs, while Bryant and Giel each scored two. Wright also scored a run in the game, and Lohri and Giel, who had a double, each drove in a run. Bryant tallied two stolen bases, and Giel had one.
With the split, Wittenberg goes to 24-14 on the season, while Wilmington is now 17-19. The Tigers have now scored 204 runs in 38 games and are batting .299 as a team with an on-base percentage of .385. They currently occupy first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) at 10-2, while DePauw is 9-3. Denison and Kenyon are both 7-5.
