Huge Third Quarter Propels Tigers to Their First Win
WILMINGTON, OH - In their second game in as many days, Wittenberg Women's Basketball took on the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament hosts, the Wilmington Quakers. Despite a close first half, the Tigers were able to pull away in the second to even their season record at 1-1.
In the first quarter, the Tigers were outscored by three, 18-15, as Madi Barnett (Cincinnati, OH / Kings) led the team in scoring with five points. The Tigers responded by outscoring the Quakers by four points, 17-14, in the second quarter to head into halftime up by one point. In the second quarter, Cadence Boyd (Cincinnati, OH / Monroe) led the way with five points.
The Tigers broke the game open with a humongous run in the third quarter to give themselves a 12-point lead going into the final frame by outscoring the Quakers, 26-15. Of the 26 third quarter points, 12 came from the duo of Hope Orders (Grove City, OH / Bishop Ready) and Catherine Buddenberg (Elsmere, KY / Dixie Heights), with each making two threes to extend the Tiger lead. In the fourth, both teams had their lowest scoring quarter of the game with 12 points for the Tigers and only 11 for the Quakers, as Orders scored another five to add to her total. Outscoring the Quakers in three consecutive quarters, the Tigers eventually walked away with the 13-point win, 70-57.
Team Leaders
- Barnett, Buddenberg, and Molly Mossing (Cedarville, OH / Cedarville) each logged 13 points, as Orders totaled another 11.
- Barnett paced the team in assists as well with seven and Karley Moore (Tipp City, OH / Bethel) added another three.
- Maddie Griga (Cincinnati, OH / Mount Notre Dame) had a team-high seven rebound and Buddenberg pulled down six.
Team Comparison
- Tiger totals for the game included going 26-of-65 from the field (40 percent), nine-of-21 from three-point range (42.9 percent), and nine-of-11 (81.8 percent) from the free-throw line. The Tigers had 36 rebounds, 15 assists, 15 turnovers, 22 points off turnovers, and 26 points in the paint along with 21 bench points.
- The Quakers were 18-of-48 from the field (37.5 percent), five-of-24 from three-point range (20.8 percent), and 16-of-26 from the charity stripe (61.5 percent). They also had 27 rebounds, eight assists, 20 turnovers, 15 points off turnovers, and 22 points in the paint.
