Tigers Drop Defensive Battle With DePauw
SPRINGFIELD, OH – Wittenberg Women's Basketball found the baskets tough to come by as the Tigers dropped a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest to DePauw, 51-32, on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Pam Evans Smith Arena, part of the Health, Wellness & Athletics Complex.
Held to just two points in the first quarter, the Tigers found themselves in a defensive slugfest that left them trailing by just five at the half at 19-14. However, some hot three-point shooting allowed DePauw to go up by 17 after the third quarter was in the books at 41-24. Despite holding the Tigers from DePauw well below their season scoring average of just over 64 points per game, Wittenberg couldn't get its offense on track. DePauw outscored Witt 10-8 in the final frame en route to the victory.
With the loss, Wittenberg falls to 8-7 on the season and 1-3 in the NCAC. DePauw improves to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Denison and Ohio Wesleyan were undefeated atop the league at 3-0 going into Wednesday night action. John Carroll is 3-1, followed by DePauw at 2-2.
DePauw led from start to finish and forced Wittenberg into 20 turnovers and scored 20 points off the miscues. DePauw had 12 turnovers total.
Even in this low-scoring affair, two Tigers scored in double digits for Wittenberg with Karsen Karlblom (Crystal Lake, IL / Prairie Ridge) putting down 13 points and Molly Mossing (Cedarville, OH / Cedarville) adding 12. Karlblom was also the team's top rebounder, pulling down seven.
