SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers and Wilmington Quakers were unable to settle things over the course of 110 minutes, leading to a 1-1 draw that left both teams with 1-1-1 overall records in the early going of the 2013 season.
Wittenberg held a 10-6 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kick opportunities. Both teams found the back of the opposing net once in the second half, with only the host Tigers even attempting a shot in either overtime period.
Wilmington got on the board first on a goal just 2:08 into the second half by Paij Shelton. Wittenberg finally came up with a response in the 82nd minute, with the help of the referee's whistle. A foul was called in the Wilmington penalty box and sophomore Zoe Curry (Milford, Ohio/Ursuline) made good on the resulting free kick to knot the score.
Senior Kayla Murphy (Dayton, Ohio/Stebbins) made a fine impression in her first appearance of the 2013 season, accounting for four shots in her return from a preseason injury. Curry and sophomore Kate Burns (Granger, Ind./Penn) added two shots apiece.
Defensively, Wittenberg did not allow a shot over the first 45 minutes with freshman Kelsey Lorko (Fairview Park, Ohio/Fairview) in goal. Over the final 65 minutes, sophomore Maggie Grieser (St. Paris, Ohio/Graham) was forced into two saves.
