Wittenberg University Men's Basketball Tradition of Success

The Wittenberg University men's basketball program is the all-time winningest NCAA Division III program in the country measured by both total number of victories and winning percentage. The Tigers have participated in more NCAA tournaments and Final Fours than any other DIII program in the nation. Taking all NCAA divisions into account, the Tigers have the third best winning percentage, which places then in front of such esteemed programs as Duke, Kansas and UCLA.

Camp Director and Instructional Staff

Wittenberg Head Coach Matt Croci brings 8 seasons as a head coach and 17 years of college coaching experience as the Camp Director. Croci is a former Wittenberg All-American, a member of the schools Hall of Honor and is the only person in the history of the North Coast Athletic Conference to be named both Player and Coach of the Year. Wittenberg assistant coaches Nathan Wahle, Pat Carlisle and Alan Watson bring decades of coaching and camp experience. The camp staff will also include some of the best high school and college coaches, in addition to current Wittenberg players.

Outstanding Facilities

All camp activities are conducted in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Center on the Wittenberg campus. The HPER Center includes 5 full courts and 22 basket areas. The main instruction area is in an AIR-CONDITIONED gym. Campers also will have access to an Olympic size swimming pool.

Firestine Residence Hall is also AIR-CONDITIONED. It is located just 100 yards from the HPER Center and 150 yards from the Dining Hall. Camp coaches reside on the same floors as the campers and provide meal break and evening supervision in the dormitory. Roommate assignments are made according to camp registration form requests. Campers who do not specify a roommate will be paired with a camper of comparable age.

Highlights and Features of the Comprehensive Skills Camps

  • The emphasis of the camp is on fundamental basketball skill instruction and concepts of team play.
  • Passing, dribbling, shooting, individual offense and defense, and rebounding are primary instruction areas.
  • Camper to instructor ratio will be 10 campers to 1 instructor.
  • All camp activity takes place indoors – total of 5 courts and 20 baskets with three courts and 14 baskets located in an airconditioned gymnasium.
  • Daily 3/3 and 5/5 competitive play with tournaments in both 3/3 and 5/5 conducted on final day of camp.
  • Maximum of 7 players per 5/5 camp team.
  • Both the Residence Hall and dining hall are also air-conditioned.

Highlights and Features of the Guard & Forward Position Camp

Date: June 21-23, 2017

  • The entire focus of this camp is on building offensive skills with shooting being the primary emphasis. 
  • Comprehensive shooting instruction will focus on proper hand mechanics and footwork to become a good shooter. 
  • Tips on developing a quick release and improving your shooting range will be included. 
  • Topics to be covered with big men include: pre and post catch footwork, catching and protecting the ball, post moves on the block, face up offense, reading and beating double teams, ball screen offense and offensive rebounding. 
  • Guard instruction will include: using the dribble to create offense in both the open court and half court offensive areas, moving without the ball including setting and receiving screens, and utilizing the ball screen. 
  • Camper to instructor ratio will be 7 campers to 1 instructor. 
  • All camp activity takes place in an air-conditioned gymnasium.
  • Both Firestine Residence Hall and the Student Center dining hall are also air-conditioned.

Resident camper - $260
Includes 2 nights lodging, all meals, and all basketball sessions.

Commuter camper - $ 215
Includes all meals except breakfast and all basketball sessions.

Highlights and Features of the Father & Child Camp (CLOSED)

Date: June 17-18, 2017

  • The focus of this camp is to a create a fun atmosphere for dads and kids to learn more about basketball
  • All instruction will allow dads and kids to work in the same groups and will allow for all skill levels
  • Camp will also include games, contests and other activities
  • Saturday night Fun night – kids in the student center game room and dads across the hall in Founders Pub
  • All camp activity takes place in an air-conditioned arena.
  • Both New Residence Hall and the Student Center dining hall are also air-conditioned.

2017 Men's Basketball Tiger Top 50 Camp

Wittenberg Men's Basketball is offering the opportunity to receive elite college level coaching and instruction. The primary focus will be to build offensive skills through drills and game simulated repetitions that are able to be taken and applied beyond the camp. Our coaching staff will provide feedback and instruction that is specific to each individual. Not only will you receive high quality coaching and repetitions, but you will experience it on the campus of the NCAA Division III all-time winningest basketball program in the country.

Camp Coaching Staff

Women's Volleyball Head Coach: Paco Labrador

In his thirteenth season as the Tiger Volleyball Head Coach, Paco Labrador led the Red and White to its twelfth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and second National Championship match. The Tigers finished the season ranked second nationally. Coach Paco Labrador has amassed a record of 406-62 and a winning percentage of .868 in thirteen seasons at the helm of the Tigers.

Coach Labrador's training has produced 15 All-Americans.

  • Setters Sarah Yuskewich (three-time first-team All-American), Erin Slattery and Amy Cox
  • Middle hitters Kristin Fox, Katie Sumner, Miranda Sagle and Emily Kahlig
  • Left side hitters Emily Bell, Monica McDonald and Kimmie Dyer
  • Right side hitters Lindsay Nelson, Jackie Williams and Kara Seidenstricker
  • Liberos Emilie Schmid and Christina Gilene

Coach Labrador was voted Regional Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2007; North Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015; and AVCA National Coach of the Year in 2011.

Assistant Coach: Evelyn Carus

Carus was named the assistant coach in March 2016 after spending her first year as the assistant coach at Alma College in Michigan. Carus was a four-year letter winner as a libero at Otterbein University, where she ranked in the top ten all time with digs in a career, digs in a season, and digs in a match. She was a key member of the Cardinals OAC Conference Tournament Championship in 2012, along with appearances in the NCAA DIII Tournament 3 or her 4 years.

The Wittenberg University men's volleyball program is the newest addition to the tradition of excellence within the Athletic Department. Pulling great student athletes from the best programs in the Midwest, the ceiling is high for the men’s initial competitive season in the Spring of 2016.

Philosophy of the Wittenberg Men’s Volleyball Camp

"The purpose of our Spring ID Camp is to actively teach and positively reinforce the basic fundamental skills needed to learn, play and improve one's individual talent. We believe campers should be focused, learning, and moving through the entirety of the camp experience. We have superb facilities and have assembled an experienced and skilled instructional staff, which enables us to provide an outstanding camp experience to everyone in attendance."

All camp activities are conducted at the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) Center, located on the Wittenberg University campus which includes five full courts. Three of the courts are located in the Pam Evans Smith Arena where varsity men’s and women’s volleyball matches are played.

Wittenberg University, located near Interstate 70 in Springfield, Ohio, is readily accessible from anywhere in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Springfield is 35 miles west of Columbus and 20 miles northeast of Dayton. Interstate 75 is just 15 miles east of Springfield.
